My father and I both snap up green denim when we can find it - in thrift stores, at garage sales, etc.

These jeans are not quite the shade of green we want, but I posted this picture here to illustrate how jeans should fit. I get truly irritated reading all of the magazine copy fussing over jean fit. They are jeans for the love of god!. They should be loose and flattering like this pair. I am tired of women complaining that they can't find a flattering pair of jeans. Again, you are buying jeans, not a couture dress!

This is why I often turn to men's jeans to get the right waistline.

I am committed to this upholstery thing....

I am a very competitive person. Not in a mean-spirited or personal way, but when I see people hawking their underwhelming craft projects on the internet, it inspires me to learn a craft that would truly be worth owning.

I love and greatly appreciate all of the craft sites on the internet, I love that the internet is encouraging people to recycle or make their own clothing, jewelry, and decor. But sites like Etsy are tedious to sift through.

A couple of weeks ago, I found a thrift store that I will not name that had some truly terrific furniture finds - so many that I would need a moving van to haul them all.

They had 1940s and 1950s chairs and sofas that looked like this:

Most of the pieces were under fifty dollars, save the sofas which were between $70 and $90. Used furniture bargains are hard to find in the Chicago area. I am teaching myself simple upholstery projects, but I realized that for a few hundred dollars I could learn to fix up tricky chairs and sofas like the one above.

I did a search for upholstery classes in Chicago. On a site called Back Garage found another example of DIY upholstery plus a discussion on learning upholstery in Chicago.

I am going to check out Truman College, where I took my first drafting classes.

With all of the old homes in the area, you would think there would be more people online interested in DIY decorating.

Blogged with the Flock Browser

I MAKE A DECISION

I am now practically hyperventilating about these (formerly) leather chairs. I decide they would be a perfect homecoming surprise for my dad, who is away recuperating for at least a month.

I went on a spree at Home Depot today, buying tools for sanding and for removing nails. I also bought my very own clamp! I had used them in furniture making classes and I had no idea that they were so affordable. Now my re-upholstering job will be more precise. I also got dust masks and safety goggles. My father has tons of equipment, but I decided I would like some of my own.

Furniture supplies are cute and small. They have a girly appeal. I fell in love with a mini electric hand sander ($40) and may ask for it for Christmas. I run around the house with my sanding block, testing it out on the floor and some of the old furniture I want to re-hab.

I got to work sanding the finish off one of the armchairs. I am more in love than ever with the look of this soft oak. I ordered fabric samples online, but the one I think I will use for these chairs is "Pony Ride" in "Nude". In spite of the sexy name, it is a style that will please both me and my father.

Pony Ride Nude | DIY Upholstery Supply

Blogged with the Flock Browser

Tomorrow I will use my tools to remove upholstery tacks and get the rest of the horsehair and leather off of the chair.
